SANFORD CREDIT UNION HISTORY
OVER 50 YEARS OF COMMITMENT TO A COMMUNITY

The Sanford Credit Union Society Limited began, as it still remains today, a locally organized and run financial institution for the benefit of it's members and the community.

In the Spring of 1950, ten concerned local citizens began to work on the idea of having a financial institution of their own in Sanford. The process to get a credit union going was started by each founding citizen putting up $5.00 in share capital. This led to the issuing of Letters of Patent for the Sanford Credit Union Society by the Minister of Agriculture at the time, Francis Bell.

The original founders were Walter Moors, William Hamer, Charles Moors, George McKay, Ralph Junkin, Edward Reschke, Burton McDole, Clarence Rodgers, Henry Penner, and Laurence Murray. Incorporation soon followed and the Sanford Credit Union Society Limited was off to the races. The first offices were in Bill Hamer's kitchen. By the end of 1950 the Sanford Credit Union Society Limited had 58 members, 6 depositors, and 7 borrowers.
